Home Theater Profile FAQs

What is the DivX® Certified Program?

The DivX Certified Program was created in response to overwhelming consumer demand for DivX-powered video creation products. The program enables licensed DivX partners to make their products compatible with DivX Certified Decoder technology, and create amazing quality DivX video. The DivX Certified program ensures that the DivX video content consumers create can be played on any DivX Certified product.

What product classes/categories are applicable to the DivX® Certified home theater profile?

DivX Certified home theater products include DVD players, DVD-R platforms, set top boxes, PVRs, and Digital Media Adapters.

Why should I certify my home theater product?

DivX Certified status is a valuable stamp of approval that assures the worldwide community of DivX users that your consumer electronic device is capable of handling high-quality DivX video in the home theater profile. DivX video technology's worldwide popularity, technical superiority, and position as the industry standard for digital video make it the format of choice for video encoding, decoding and content distribution.

How does a product become certified under the DivX® home theater profile?

Product manufacturers who wish to achieve DivX® Certified home theater status must submit a separate application for each product model they wish to certify. The products themselves must also be sent to DivX, Inc. labs for rigorous testing before certification is granted. Products must meet all of the technical requirements specified by the program in order to pass.

How do consumers know a product is certified for the DivX® home theater profile?

Our decoder slogan, "If it doesn't say it, it won't play it" can be taken literally. As per strict branding guidelines enforced by DivX, Inc., all products from licensed hardware partners that have passed the DivX Certified testing process will be branded with the DivX Certified home theater logo.

Are DivX® Certified home theater products required to play DivX 3.11 video content?

Yes, DivX Certified home theater products are required to play DivX 3.11 content.

Why are Quarter pel and Global Motion Compensation (GMC) not supported?

Support for Quarter Pel and GMC at the chip level is extremely processor-intensive, and DivX, Inc. does not believe that the relatively small number of DivX users who take advantage of these features justifies inclusion of the feature in the certification program requirements. This decision is based on our desire to bring the highest-quality DivX® Certified consumer electronics products to market as quickly as possible at the lowest possible price point.

What audio formats are DivX® Certified home theater products required to support?

The DivX Certified Program requires that decoders support MPEG-1 Layer 2 or MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) audio within DivX video.

Do DivX® Certified home theater devices play other video formats?

The DivX Certified Program is focused on playback of DivX video content. While the ability to play other video formats is not a certification requirement, the program ensures high quality products, therefore most DivX Certified products support multiple video formats as well.

Must DivX Certified home theater devices play content from the DivX-powered Video-on-Demand (VOD) system?

Yes, DivX Certified Home Theater products are required to play content downloaded or purchased from the DivX-powered VOD system.
