Guidelines for Trademark Use
Unless otherwise expressly provided, the use of the DivX trademark and logo is restricted to officially licensed partners of DivX, LLC, and may only be used for specific purposes authorized by DivX. The trademark and logo are typically used in product packaging, documentation and marketing materials, although the specific authorized use may differ from partner to partner. High-resolution versions of the official logos are included in branding packages that are delivered to authorized users. The branding guidelines included in these branding packages describe how the official logos may be used and displayed by partners who receive them.
Please review our guidelines below, which are applicable to all uses of our trademarks.
- Do not use trademarks in a generic fashion.
- Never modify or alter the trademarks.
- Always use proper trademark attribution.
- Always use the DivX trademark as an adjective.
- Do not use any DivX trademarks in the names of your products or services.
Do not use trademarks in a generic fashion
DivX is a registered trademark of DivX, LLC, a subsidiary of Rovi Corporation, and may only be used to describe content offered in the DivX format; not to describe any digital video. If it's not really a DivX video, please don't call it that.
“DivX” is a brand name. As a trademark, DivX should always be used as an adjective. The mark should never be used as a verb or noun.
Examples:
-
“This product supports the DivX® format.”
NOT “This product supports DivX” -
“Includes the ability to create DivX® video versions of your digital video content.”
NOT “This product supports DivX”
Never modify or alter the trademarks
The DivX trademark is a brand name that is spelled in a special way with distinctive capitalization. Never make the trademark possessive, change the spelling, insert hyphens, make one word into two or make the trademark plural. The DivX trademark is properly spelled “DivX” with a capital “D” a capital “X” and a lowercase“i” and “v.” Proper capitalization is part of the trademark.
The DivX® trademark should never be changed to a possessive like “;DivX's”. Do not include phrases like “DivX's quality is unmatched!” Instead say “The quality of DivX® video is unmatched!” The DivX® trademark should never be spelled “Div-X,” “Div X,” “Divx,” “DIVX,” “divx” or some other variation that is not the correct spelling. To identify two or more DivX® files, use the phrase “DivX” files,“ never “DivXes.”
DivX logos, search boxes, and other links provided to you for use on web sites promoting video content found within the DivX communities or partner sites are designed specifically for such use and may not be altered in any manner and must appear by themselves with reasonable spacing between each side of the applicable logo or search box and other graphic or textual elements. By using our logos, trademarks or search boxes, you recognize that all goodwill generated through that use inure to our benefit.
Always use proper trademark attribution
Your use of DivX trademarks must always be accompanied by the proper symbols and attribution. A trademark symbol is included for all prominent use of the mark, e.g., on labels, packaging, promotional brochures, data sheets, press releases and advertisement headlines, except where special space or style criteria prevent compliance. The proper trademark symbol for the DivX trademark is ® (superscript “(R)”). If you cannot use the special character symbol for some reason, a text replacement will suffice (e.g., “DivX(R)” instead of “DivX®”).
The generic name of the products identified by the trademark should immediately follow the trademark.
Examples
- DivX® media format
- DivX® video
- DivX® format
-
DivX® codec
NOT “DivX/MPEG-4 files”
In addition to using the proper trademark symbol when using the DivX trademark, you must always include the following trademark attribution on your product packaging, product documentation or other location where legal notices are displayed:
“DivX and the associated DivX logos are trademarks of DivX, LLC, a subsidiary of Rovi Corporation”
Note: DivX is also our company name. When referring to the company DivX, no symbols or attribution is necessary.
Do not use any DivX trademarks in the names of your products or services
You may only use the trademark name “DivX” in your domain name or URL if you exclusively offer content in the DivX format; beyond this, DivX trademarks may not be used in the name of your product or service. For example, you may not call a product the "DivX Conversion Utility," and you may not use "divxmedia.com" as your domain name
Don't steal from us
Do not use DivX or our logos or search boxes to disparage DivX, our products or services, or in a manner which, in our reasonable judgment, may diminish or otherwise damage our company's goodwill in such logos.
Don't steal from others
We like good movies about as much as the next guy, but we do not endorse or support the unauthorized use of copyrighted materials, and we really don't want you to use our trademarks to promote such things.
Changes to These Guidelines
DivX reserves the right in its sole discretion to modify these guidelines at any time. DivX also reserves the right to take action against any use that does not conform to these guidelines.
