In This Corner Takes Iconic Nintendo Contest from Basement to a World Audience

FORT WORTH, Texas & SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In This Corner, a new short film from Item Four productions, is available for viewing or download on digital video community DivX Stage6 at www.stage6.com. Made by a small team of independent filmmakers with almost no budget, the film has tapped into a current of nostalgia for early 1980s video game experience and garnered an enthusiastic audience of fans who are sharing their memories and experiences on Stage6.
Inspired by real life events, In This Corner is set in the late 1980s and is the story of a young boy’s Rocky-like struggle to conquer his favorite video game, “Mike Tyson’s Punchout.” Starring Ben Barrows, the film was directed by Daniel Baxter, also the co-creator of the popular How It Should Have Ended animation series. Filmed in Sulphur Springs, Texas, In This Corner accurately captures the innocence and obsession of a previous generation’s mania for video games. Dozens of Stage6 community members have remarked on the similarity of the film with their own experiences from the time, commenting on the pitch-perfect recreation of the clothing, culture and spirit of the “Nintendo generation.”

A fifteen minute, high-quality DivX version of In This Corner is available for download on DivX Stage6. In addition to viewing and downloading the film, users can also view journal posts from the Item Four team and join the conversation themselves through interactive forums and user-created journals.

“In This Corner was really done as an experiment, with no great ambition of it ever being seen by a large audience,” said Baxter. “To have so many people see our little movie, and respond so positively on DivX Stage6 has been an incredible experience, and really provided the team with enormous enthusiasm to make more movies.”

“Daniel is exactly the kind of filmmaker, and In This Corner exactly the kind of film, we love to see on DivX Stage6,” said Darrius Thompson, CXO, Community and Internet, at DivX, Inc. “He has been able to create a passionate and engaged audience on the site, which can only provide a launching pad for even greater work in the future.”
