New DivX Web Player Hits 1 Million Downloads in One Week

March 9, 2006

First DivX Software to Embed High-Definition, Full-Screen Video into Web Pages

SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–March 9, 2006–DivX, Inc., today announced that the DivX Web Player 1.0, the first fully featured in-browser player for DivX video, has been downloaded over a million times in the first week of its release. The DivX Web Player lets anyone embed high definition DivX videos in their web pages or blogs, without using special streaming servers or installing server-side software. When using the DivX Web Player 1.0, high definition video can play live inside the browser in a special windowed playback mode, or can be displayed full-screen. The new player software is platform agnostic and is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems, and every major web browser application. It also allows for progressive download, so large video files can begin to playback even while they are in the process of downloading. Unlike streaming solutions, however, the DivX Web Player allows for the easy saving of the favorite video files by the user while also eliminating the need for a special streaming server.

The DivX Web Player is one of many recent software releases from DivX, including updated versions of the DivX codec, the DivX Converter and DivX for Mac. In addition to advanced interactive features, the DivX technology is optimized for use with dual core and hyperthreaded CPUs in today’s latest computers. The DivX Converter 6.1 offers consumers the simplest DivX video encoding application available, while also integrating a large number of new features for more advanced users. And finally, DivX 6 for Mac brings all the latest innovations of DivX to the Mac platform.

“The DivX Web Player extends the ability of DivX to offer a transformative digital media experience for consumers and content creators. It empowers web video at a higher visual quality and wider interoperability than any other video technology on the market,” said Darrius Thompson, co-founder and general manager for Consumer Software Products and Services at DivX, Inc. “Most importantly, users of the DivX Web Player will be able to watch and create video files that are interoperable with millions of DivX Certified DVD players and other devices.”
