    Version 5.1

    Released 2003-11-04

    New:

    • Added a new high-quality psychovisual mode that includes the following features:
      • Texture cortex masking and rate distortion algorithm.
      • Hybrid mode (with texture cortex masking).
      • Speed optimization.
      • Chroma operation (this option is not enabled by default for performance reasons; to enable it, create an empty file on your desktop called "DivxPvShapingChroma.txt" for "fast" mode and "DivxPvSimpleChroma.txt" for slow mode; testing shows only 1-2% gains in JND tests).
    • The decoder has been re-architected and is now 50 to 100% faster.
    • The decoder now supports automatic post-processing during video playback.
    • Added new features to the rate control modes of the encoder, including:
      • A complexity vector log file.
      • An API that allows real-time control of rate control.
      • An API that allows forced I-frame insertion.
    • Added a high-quality B-frame mode. The motion estimation for B-frames is improved, and the quantization modulation is changed.

    Improved:

    • Redesigned encoder GUI. The new GUI is more accessible and simplifies overall usage.
    • DivX 3 compatibility. (There were no problems detected on any of the more than 60 hours of test content.)
    • Performance of Nth Pass strategy planning performance.
    • AVI importer's IMA ADPCM parser modified for more compatibility.

    Fixed:

    • A bug that caused the quantizer to overshoot the bitrate following a transition to a complex scene.
    • A bug that limited the interframe change in quantizer to the ideal quantizer or plus or minus 2.
    • A bug with the rate control video buffer verifier (VBV) that would enforce a "3 sec" max bitrate.
    • Several bugs that affected Nth Pass encoding strategy planning.
    • A bug that caused motion vector (MV) reuse to be non-functional.
    • A bug that caused problems when MV reuse and psychovisual mode were used together.
    • QuickTime 5 encoding and decoding support.
    • Fixed bug with iMovie when importing media files with IMA-ADPCM or MP3.

    Version 5.0.5

    Released 2002-05-02

    Features:

    • MPEG-4 Compatibility. DivX Pro is able to decode all levels of MPEG-4 Simple Profile, MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile, and H.263 video. It is also capable of encoding MPEG-4 Simple Profile. (ISO/IEC 14496-2).
    • Integrated video encoding tools. DivX Pro includes built-in video encoding tools that are tightly integrated with the core codec. De-interlacing, resizing, cropping, and intelligence inverse telecine and deinterlacing tools are included in the software. These are commonly used tools that would normally have to be provided by separate applications. Integrating these tools directly into DivX Pro provides for faster performance and better results.
    • Psychovisual modeling. DivX Pro includes psychovisual modeling, an advanced technique that takes into account knowledge about how the Human Visual System (HVS) works to compress moving video images into much smaller sizes without a loss of video quality. Expect up to 20% smaller file sizes from using this feature.
    • Advanced support for existing encoding applications. All the advanced new features of DivX Pro are designed to work immediately with existing video encoding applications and require no application updates in order to work.
    • DivX Certified Profile Verification
    • Advanced Rate Control Algorithm. The DivX Rate control algorithm supports 1 Pass, 2Pass and Nth-Pass encoding.

    Fixes from Beta:

    • Bug in MP3 Encoder that prevented usage with DV movies
    • Audio quality bug in IMA ADPCM compressor
    • Problem with encoding resized QuickTime movies
